Watching Over Them – Erasmus Bridge Rotterdam
Watching Over Them
Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam – Architect Ben van Berkel
It seems that I have a crush on bridges lately. The third one in a week’s time and it’s still not over.
It was quite difficult to choose which view to share of this one. I love all of them. It’s among the most iconic landmarks in Europe, yet when you get to see it from near, it’s so surprising, as if you saw it for the first time.
Unfortunately I was in a crazy rush when in Rotterdam last time and I didn’t have the time to study and photograph it as much as I wanted (yet another time my company was decided to leave without me, as I was lost in my world taking pictures), so I’ll definitely have to get back some day and “get my revenge” on it.
This shot is also an example of how to use the foreground and background to your advantage.
Above is the scene I had in front of me when this photo was taken. There was not enough time to change my point of view so I had to act fast and use what I had. Which was a very cluttered foreground that had to be removed, so I approached the bridge and used a long lens to frame, and a background also cluttered that wasn’t permitting a clear shot of the bridge, but that was used in a creative way to suggest the spirit if the area: the Erasmus Bridge watching over the Rotterdam skyline.
