From Basics to Fine Art Book Review by Antony Northcutt
This is a recent From Basics to Fine Art Book Review by Antony Northcutt. Anthony is a fine art photographer and instructor who made a great review of the book:
From Basics to Fine Art – Black and White Photography – Architecture & Beyond
….written by me and Joel Tjintjelaar and that we published a couple of months ago. We thank him for that and want to share it with you all, so you can see what a reader who is himself a black and white photographer and educator, thinks about our book.
Here is the link to Antony’s review, so you can read it yourself:

So far the book was a big success – I don’t like to brag but this is the truth – and we had wonderful feedback from our readers whom we thank so much for taking the time to get back to us with their impressions. We are more than happy that the book was useful for so many people and that it provided them not only with inspiration but also with concrete solutions and tips for how to see photography, how to find their vision and personal style and how to practically process their images. No better reward than knowing you helped others find the artist in themselves. For me, this is the best thing that this book did and is still doing. Sharing my knowledge was always one of my biggest desires, from when I was a kid already, everyone who knows me a bit better knows this, so now, to be able to do it and see the results so clearly, with the book, the workshops and mentoring courses I’m doing, with my students wining awards and distinctions in international fine art photography competitions, this makes me very happy and wanting to go on with it and do even more about it (some news are coming regarding this, stay tuned!).
To get back to From Basics to Fine Art book review by Antony Northcutt, Antony’s review is not only a very good review of the book, but a beautifully written one. Antony’s writing style is lovely, I was impressed by it, go see for yourself.
Let me quote a few things from his review that made me very proud I’m one of the authors:
“I’ve just spent the past 3 weeks, not just reading and learning about Black and White, Long Exposure Architectural Fine Art Photography, but feeling like I’ve shared an intimate conversation with it’s authors. “From Basics to Fine Art” is an echo of both Joel and Julia’s love for Architectural Photography, and it’s a book that’s far more than the pages it’s written on.
(…)
” …to review this book would be like reviewing the Bible. An almost impossible task, due to the amount and depth of content to be covered.”
(…)
“I can only do this with words, “It’s a Masterpiece”, for anyone that has any interest in shooting Black and White Long Exposure Architectural Fine Art Photography. This title simply has to be on your bookshelf. If you’re just starting out, or already an expert in this field, again …. buy this book you will learn far more than you expect from it. I certainly did.”
(…)
“To conclude …. Circa 1950, Ansel Adams first published a trilogy of photography books called, “The Camera, The Negative and The Print”, widely accepted as the gospel in terms of producing and printing photographic images. I can’t help but think that Joel and Julia have produced a volume that will have the same effect as Ansel’s books did, and continue to do so to this day.”
