Join us in a land where tradition meets modernity and history lives harmoniously next to the present day. Japan is the perfect photography and adventure land. If you want to capture a mesmerizing array of history, culture, and natural beauty, then this workshop is for you. Let’s travel together on a journey through the heart of Japan.
We will begin our journey in the fascinating megalopolis of Tokyo, with its modern and historical architecture that will amaze you, and its vibrant streets and bustling neighborhoods that offer endless inspiration. We will be shooting skyscrapers in Tokyo’s Financial District, ancient temples, Zen gardens, and everything in between.
We will then travel westward to charming Kyoto with its timeless elegance. Home to countless UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Kyoto is a paradise of Buddhist and Shinto temples, traditional wooden architecture, and peaceful gardens. We will photograph the most inspiring of these places, like for instance the famous Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kiyomizu-Dera and more, while experiencing the essence of Japanese civilization.
Our journey isn’t limited to the big cities and urban photography. We will also be venturing outside the city on day trips to shoot peaceful landscapes, ancient shrines, mysterious castles, tranquil bamboo groves, and vibrant orange torii gates, set against lush forest backdrops or serene waterscapes.
While capturing Japan’s beauty is an integral part of our journey, your experience will go beyond photography. This workshop isn’t just about taking extraordinary photographs; it’s about connecting with a culture that will leave a lasting impression. It will be a voyage of discovery through a captivating country. Be prepared to return home with not only breathtaking photographs but also full of memories from the Land of the Rising Sun. This experience will shape your vision for the photographs you create and give you the best opportunity for self expression.
During the workshop, you will receive expert guidance from a multi-awarded internationally photographer who share your passion for capturing the essence and beauty of this inspiring country. Julia will help you refine your technical skills, explore new creative perspectives, and push the boundaries of your artistry. Moreover, you will connect with fellow photographers who share your enthusiasm, fostering a supportive community that will uplift and inspire you throughout your journey.
If the time allows, we may use the time to discuss student images or review post-processing techniques. Julia will be available for individual questions related to all these topics during the workshop, so if you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
In any case, regardless of the conditions during the field workshop, we will be reviewing the images of the students and discussing post-processing techniques during the post-workshop group live online session included in the Extended Workshop Level and the Full Workshop Level, so if you are interested in getting feedback for your work and exploring the post-processing side of photography, it is recommended to choose one of these two options in addition to the in the field workshop.
Join us on this photographic journey to capture the soul of Japan. Your journey awaits, and so do the photographs that will tell your story. Don’t miss this opportunity to embark on a photographic adventure of a lifetime.

IMPORTANT INFO FOR PLANNING YOUR TRIP
For those who need to travel and arrange their trip to Japan, we will start the workshop in Tokyo on Thursday, April 25, 2024, in the afternoon, by shooting in the city after checking in to our hotel. We will finish in Kyoto, on Wednesday, May 1, early afternoon, after which you can travel back to Tokyo to catch your flight back home.
You may want to come to Tokyo the day prior to the start of the workshop and leave the day after we finish. However, if you are pressed for time, you will be able to arrive on April 25 in the morning and leave on May 1 in the afternoon/evening.
The program every day will comprise, by case, shooting in the city where our base is, or traveling to a different town/village or other natural location for a more varied and exciting photography experience. We will be out shooting from morning to afternoon (late afternoon, early evening in some cases).
All students will receive a few weeks before the workshop a detailed program per day with info about shooting locations, hotel and travel recommendations, and other useful recommendations and tips for your trip.

Japan Workshop 2024 Practical Details
Transport & Accommodation
To join the workshop, if coming from abroad, you will fly to Tokyo. If you are inside Japan, taking the train is the best option. If you are in Tokyo, you’re lucky, you don’t need to travel. Just join us on the first workshop day.
Transport is not included in the workshop since many of the locations we will be shooting don’t provide enough parking space for a larger vehicle that would be needed for the entire group. Also, traveling by car is not the fastest option in Japan. The best option is traveling by train. This is what we will be doing for longer distances.
Japan has one of the best and safest railway networks in the world, covering extensively the entire country. Thus, in Japan, traveling by train is even more popular than traveling by car. We will also take the famous Bullet Train, the Shinkansen, between cities, which is an exciting experience in itself.
Inside the city, we will be moving around by subway and as much as possible by foot so we can experience as much as possible city life and be able to take photos in a variety of locations.
You will also need to arrange your accommodation. It is very easy to do that nowadays, and from our experience, it is better to offer the freedom to the participants to choose their own lodging style when there is no need for all of us to be in the same hotel. This ensures that the trip will also be more budget-friendly, as we always set the workshop base in a spot that is not only central and practical for transportation, but also has wide variety of lodging options, from budget-friendly up to as luxurious as you wish.
We will be staying in Tokyo and Kyoto, as main workshop bases, and as long as you can reach the meeting points every day, you can stay wherever you want. It is recommended however, to stay closer to the meeting points. The hotel price for a good quality single room in a 3-4 start hotel can start around 90 EUR (USD) and go as high as you want for luxury accommodation.
We will send details and recommendations for how to best travel to Tokyo, hotel recommendations (where to stay and when). as well as detailed info on how to book a rail pass needed to simplify train transport. The price of the rail pass for the time of the workshop will be around 315 EUR (USD). Everything is straightforward and easy to arrange so you needn’t worry about anything.
All the details related to how to reach Tokyo and organize your lodging and transport will come from us well in advance so you can organize everything at your own pace.
At times we may have breakfast, lunch or dinner together as a group (which is always enjoyable and a wonderful moment to create new friendships and learn new things from your peers), however the meal costs are not covered by the workshop fee.

Practical Preparation Advice
Clothing
More details about choices for clothing and equipment will come together with the details about transport and accommodation, but in principle, Japan has a temperate climate and the weather will be pleasant at the time of the workshop. Daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Lightweight layers like long-sleeved shirts, light sweaters, and a jacket are recommended. You will also need comfortable walking shoes for extensive walking. Occasionally, it may rain, so a compact umbrella or raincoat is handy. It goes without saying, your camera also needs a rain cover to make sure it stays protected if we are shooting in the rain.
Physical Abilities – Difficulty
The workshop will not be very demanding from the point of view of the physical effort. We will mostly walk on flat or slightly inclined terrain and will not need to hike in extreme conditions. You may need to walk uphill or downhill however the hikes will not be steep or very demanding. In some cases, the transportation will leave us quite close to the shooting locations so we will not need to walk too much. That being said, it is important for you to know your physical limits and not push them. Depending on your physical condition, you may choose to do the “soft” version of each location shoot, walking less and not pushing yourself.
You will need to be able to carry your camera and equipment during the shooting sessions, so it won’t hurt to train a little bit before the workshop by making sure that you can walk carrying your camera back and tripod.
Safety & Wellbeing
It is important to keep in mind that you are 100% responsible for your safety, health and good condition. If at any moment you feel that you need to stop, you have to follow the feedback your body gives you and stop.
As stated in the terms and conditions of the workshop, by participating in this workshop, you agree to not hold responsible Julia Anna Gospodarou and Julia Anna Gospodarou Fine Art Photography for any personal injury or loss that may occur during the workshop. This is why you need to be mindful and not risk or push yourself, so you can get back home in the same good condition you started. Please read the workshop terms and conditions before signing up since you will find there a lot of good advice on what to take care of so you stay safe.
We warmly recommend everyone gets travel and health insurance that will cover any unforeseen situations.
Suggested Preparation Material
Except for the material available through the workshop itself, the following books and courses are good learning resources to prepare for this workshop.
The resources cover multiple theoretical, practical and post-processing subjects for an overall pre-workshop preparation which will give you better captures in the field and more impressive final images. It is particularly important to consult them before the workshop since this workshop is such a practical one.
- Video Course 5+ hours – From Vision to Final Image – Mastering B&W Photography Processing – extensive analytical black and white photography conceiving and post-processing
- Video Tutorial 2.5+ hours – Creating (en)Visionography – Long Exposure, Architecture, Fine Art Photography – theoretical and practical analysis of (en)Visionography, fine art photography, architecture and long exposure photography, working with the tilt-shift lens
- eBook 425 pages – From Basics to Fine Art – Black and White Photography – Architecture and Beyond – extensive theoretical and practical analysis of fine art black and white photography – principles, rules, practical advice, post-processing.
Who is this workshop for
Both beginning and advanced photographers are welcome to Japan Workshop 2024, regardless of the gear they use or how long they are working with photography. After all, fine art, (en)Visionography, relies more on the vision of the artist than on his gear. I have won many awards using basic gear and you can do it too. Even if you are shooting with a phone, you will get amazing opportunities on this trip. Besides, phones have become so good lately that you can even get prints from a good phone shot.
Landscape photographers, as well as architecture or urban photographers are welcome, and any photographer creating other genres of fine art photography (still life, portraiture, conceptual) or aiming to learn how to do it, will find this workshop a great tool for advancing their photography to the next level. The subject you work with is not that important, what you want to convey through it is, and you will find out why that happens and learn how to do it.
We will shoot architecture, landscapes, and travel photography, but the knowledge you will acquire in this workshop can be applied to any subject or photography genre, since it is based on your personal style and not necessarily on a specific subject. And shooting different genre than the one you shoot regularity is always one of the best ways to stay inspired, get new ideas, and learn to think out-of -the-box.
What equipment/software you need
- A camera with Bulb function so you can shoot long exposure. If you don’t want to shoot long exposure you don’t need the bulb function, but I wouldn’t miss in your place the chance to shoot long exposure. Some newer cameras can shoot longer exposures in Manual mode too. If you own such a camera, you will not need the Bulb function.
- Your favorite lenses. The first choice will be a wide-angle or ultra-wide-angle lens, which will enable you to get closer to your subject, cover a larger field of view, and create more dynamic images. If you have a tilt-shift, bring it with you, as it is a great lens for architecture and landscape photography. If you don’t own a tilt-shift lens, but you would like to get one (it is not a requirement for the workshop, only if you want to), I would recommend starting with the 24mm tilt-shift, which will cover the broadest range of subjects. In addition, a long lens in the range of 100-200mm or 100-300mm will be useful to be able to reach further and shoot details or subjects placed in the distance. You can get different discounts for photography gear from this link https://bit.ly/Adorama_JAG
- ND filters if you want to shoot long exposure. Recommended: Formatt-Hitech Firecrest or Firecrest Ultra 10, 13 (or 14) and 16-stop ND filters. Alternatively, Formatt-Hitech Firecrest or Firecrest Ultra 10, 6 and 3-stop (or 4-stop) ND filters. If you want to cover more ground, you can consider a broader range consisting of a set of 3 (or 4), 6, 10, 13 (or 14) and 16-stop ND filters that would help you cover any exposure you may need. You can use the square or circular filter version. If you use the square filters I recommend the Formatt-Hitech Firecrest anti-light-leak filter holder with magnetic polarizer. For any Formatt-Hitech Filter, holder or accessory you need to purchase, use the code JULIA10 to get 10% discount when ordering from https://bit.ly/FH_US or https://bit.ly/FH_UK
- A sturdy tripod to stabilize your camera during long exposures or to experiment with creative photography (motion blur, ICM etc.). I have negotiated some discounts for my students from FLM tripods and you can get 10% discount using the code JULIAG10 when ordering from this link https://bit.ly/FLM_JAG
- A cable release/remote control to control the shutter during the exposures, in case your camera does not have this function.
- You can have a laptop with you but it is not necessarily required. If you do bring a laptop, the following pieces of software will be the most useful, and you can use my discount codes below to get them if necessary.
- For any Topaz Labs software product, you can usually get some discounts when ordering from this link https://bit.ly/TopazLabsJAG .
- For any DxO software (NIK plugins, PhotoLab, ViewPoint, FilmPack etc.), you can usually get some discounts when ordering from this link https://bit.ly/DXO_JAG
- For Luminar or any other Macphun/Skylum product you can use the code “JULIAG10” to get 10% discount when ordering from this link https://bit.ly/LuminAR_JAG .
- For ON1 PhotoRAW, ON1 ReSize or any other ON1 product you can use the code “JULIAG20” to get 20% discount when ordering from this link https://bit.ly/On1_JAG
- Here you can find more gear and software recommendations. Choose based on your skills and style.
