I attended a one-to-one in person architectural photography class with Julia in London on October 3-6, 2024. The class covered theory, photography gear, camera settings, fieldwork with long-exposure shooting, processing... read more with Lightroom and Photoshop and discussions about working in large crowds of tourists among other topics. This was an excellent experience for me, despite a back injury that was giving me some problems during the class. Julia modified the class each day, depending on how I was feeling, to make sure I got the most out of each session. I was and am very appreciative for her understanding and patience. I highly recommend a class with Julia, whether it is with a group or on an individual basis. She is extremely knowledgable with all aspects of photography, which you will know if you have visited her website. Along with her experience in architectural photography, the traits I appreciated the most were her friendliness and patience out in the field. She put me at ease with the confidence she displayed while working in some very crowded conditions at a number of London tourist spots. Please consider taking one of her classes if you are interested in architecture, landscape and long-exposure photography. You will not be disappointed. I plan on taking another class in the future, after I spend significant time by myself practicing what I learned during the class.

The workshop was very well organised, with each day being full with visits to iconic locations. However, the locations were only the start. Julia Anna challenged us all to find our vision and create our own unique art, by exploring the scene and finding and experiencing our own emotions in the composition. The amount of tuition and attention we received was absolutely amazing and far exceeded my hopes and expectations. Having completed the first workshop I cannot wait for the next one and would say to anyone thinking about it - you will not regret it!

Julia's new video tutorial "Understanding Fine Art Architectural Photography" is outstanding just as I've come to expect from her instruction, whether in the form of a video, book, article or... read more workshop. The first half of the video course is theory and the 2nd half is a presentation of her techniques used to accomplish the wonderful black and white images she routinely produces. Julia is open with sharing those techniques, which is valuable to me. The techniques she shares are not the typical Photoshop/Lightroom techniques that you may see from other instructors. The techniques are tailored for b&w work of the type that Julia produces, and which I try to emulate, or at least use as a starting point, in my own work. A word of warning though - in the theoretical portion there are many interesting ideas presented, each of which can lead down multiple pleasant rabbit trails. Luckily for me, it's more about the journey than the product anyway. One of those ideas was seeking out a architecture course. My search for an online course lead me to Harvard University's course "The Architectural Imagination". The course is free, but the free version has a limited time for completion. I ultimately opted for the paid version after a discount was offered. The course begins with a study of Immanuel Kant's "Aesthetics" and the history of perspective. The course is so interesting it has also lead me down many more pleasant side diversions, so I haven't made it too far into the course yet. With respect to the practical 2nd half of Julia's tutorial I found new useful techniques there even though I have already read her books and articles and attended several of her workshops. The new technique that stands out for me is the use of multiple b&w conversions blended with masks. I've found that to be useful in achieving the final image I want, as well as saving time. So, I highly recommend "Understanding Fine Art Architectural Photography" and Julia's other books, articles and workshops.

Each day was packed with visits to various locations.  Julia was familiar with each location and offered insightful suggestions on how to work with both architectural and landscape subjects. The most significant takeaway for me was learning how to create art by expressing my unique vision. Julia emphasized tuning into our intuitive sense of a scene, moving beyond mere compositional rules to a more instinctive connection with subjects. She encouraged us to explore what moves us about a scene and how to express that emotional connection. She is also an expert at post processing, where she employs her unique method of 'photography drawing' to fully express her vision of an image. Seeing how she works on an image to bring about her vision gave me a whole new way of approaching post processing. If you’re interested in connecting with your artistic vision and creating truly expressive photography, I wholeheartedly recommend Julia’s workshops.

For the past 4 weeks, I have had the pleasure of attending a group workshop led by Julia Anna. However, I did not feel like being present only as an observer. The workshops were meant to last about 4 hours at a time. But be warned these easily run to about 6 hours at a time and even more ;-). Anna Julia is a passionate photo artist who is very good at conveying her vision of black and white photography. It's not only the technical tricks she conveys but also the love, the vision as an artist and the balance in the photos offered by the fellow students. In short, a course well worth the money. Afterwards, I took advantage of a bilateral meeting in which my work in general was discussed and one photo in particular was scrutinized. I started my journey with the ebook she co-wrote with Joel Tjintjelaar -- From Basics to Fine Art -- to set the stage for my efforts. The ebook provided a solid starting point and captured my random thoughts on fine art photography. I then added her two courses -- Creating (en)Visionography and Mastering B&W Photo Processing -- to learn and understand the processes she uses for turning a vision into a final print. Not so I can copy them exactly, but so I can take those parts of her processes that make sense to combine with other processes and methods to help me achieve my goals.
