We will photograph the most inspiring of these places, like, for instance, the famous Fushimi Inari-taisha, Kiyomizu-Dera, and more, while experiencing the essence of Japanese civilization.
We will then travel to Osaka, to experience and photograph its daring modern architecture, as well as its historical sites, like the famous Osaka Castle, one of the most fascinating castles of Japan.
Our journey isn’t limited to the big cities and urban photography. We will also be venturing outside the city on day trips to shoot peaceful landscapes, ancient shrines, mysterious castles, tranquil bamboo groves, and vibrant orange torii gates, set against lush forest backdrops or serene waterscapes.
While capturing Japan’s beauty is an integral part of our journey, your experience will go beyond photography. This workshop isn’t just about taking extraordinary photographs; it’s about connecting with a culture that will leave a lasting impression. It will be a voyage of discovery through a captivating country. Be prepared to return home with not only breathtaking photographs but also full of memories from the Land of the Rising Sun. IMPORTANT INFO FOR PLANNING YOUR TRIP
For those who need to travel and arrange their trip to Japan, we will start the workshop in Tokyo on Wednesday, Nov 5, 2025, in the afternoon, by shooting in the city after checking into our hotel. We will finish in Kyoto, on Tuesday, Nov 11, early afternoon, after which you can travel back to Tokyo (3 hrs from Kyoto) or Osaka (1 hr from Kyoto) to catch your flight back home.
You may want to come to Tokyo the day prior to the start of the workshop and leave the day after we finish. However, if you are pressed for time, you will be able to arrive on Nov 5 in the morning and leave on Nov 11 in the afternoon/evening.

Japan Workshop 2025 Practical Details
Transport, Accommodation & Meals
ACCOMODATION
The accommodation for the duration of the workshop (Nov 5 -11, 2025) is INCLUDED in the workshop price.
The accommodation will be in 4-star hotels, in twin rooms, some of which may be assigned as mixed-gender if the number of male and female participants doesn’t match. If you prefer a same-gender room, we will do our best to accommodate this, but it may not always be possible. To guarantee a private space, single rooms are available for an additional €500 fee. Contact us via email after registering for the workshop to add this option.
TRANSPORT
Between cities, we will travel by train, the fastest and most popular option in Japan. Japan has one of the best and safest railway networks in the world, covering the entire country extensively, much better than the road network. Thus, in Japan, traveling by train is even more popular than traveling by car. For longer distances, we will take the famous Bullet Train, the Shinkansen, which is an exciting experience in itself.
For the train travel, we will book rail passes online. You need less than 5 minutes to do that. The rail pass is nominal, so each participant has to book their own pass in their name. We will send the info on how to book the pass when we get closer to the workshop. The price of the rail pass for the duration of the workshop will be around 320 EUR (USD). The pass covers train travel and part of the subway lines.
The cost of transport is not included in the workshop fee since the rail passes are nominal and have to be ordered personally before traveling to Japan.
MEALS
At times, we may have breakfast, lunch, or dinner together as a group (which is always enjoyable and a wonderful moment to create new friendships and learn new things from your peers), however, the meal costs are not covered by the workshop fee.
Create MORE than photography
Appreciation from the experts
“I consider Julia’s (en)Visionography and Photography Drawing the most important innovation in black and white photography since the invention of the Zone System.”
– George DeWolfe – Fine Art Photographer, Instructor & Author who studied with Ansel Adams and Minor White

- Learn the secrets of fine art photography through hands-on practice in the field

- Learn how to create EMOTION and how to reach deeper into your viewers’ souls.

An intensive and exciting workshop that will elevate your art to the highest level
Practical Preparation Advice
Clothing
More details about choices for clothing and equipment will come together with the details about transport and accommodation, but in principle, Japan has a temperate climate, and the weather will be pleasant at the time of the workshop. Daytime temperatures range from 16°C to 20°C (61°F to 68°F), a bit cooler during the night. Mediumweight layers like long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a jacket are recommended. You will also need comfortable walking shoes for extensive walking. Occasionally, it may rain, so a compact umbrella or raincoat is handy. It goes without saying, your camera also needs a rain cover to make sure it stays protected if we are shooting in the rain.
Physical Abilities – Difficulty
The workshop’s difficulty level is mostly easy to moderate. We will be walking extensively every day, but it will not be very demanding from the point of view of the physical effort. We will mostly walk on flat or slightly inclined terrain and will not need to hike in extreme conditions. You may need to walk slightly uphill or downhill, however the hikes will not be steep or very demanding. In some cases, the transportation will leave us quite close to the shooting locations, so we will not need to walk too much. That being said, it is important for you to know your physical limits and not push them. Depending on your physical condition, you may choose to do the “soft” version of each location shoot, walking less and not pushing yourself.
You will need to be able to carry your camera and equipment during the shooting sessions, so it won’t hurt to train a little bit before the workshop by making sure that you can walk carrying your camera back and tripod.
Who is this workshop for
Photographers of all levels, from beginning to advanced, are welcome to Japan Workshop 2025, regardless of the gear they use or how long they have been doing photography. After all, fine art, (en)Visionography, relies more on the vision of the artist than on his gear. I have won many awards using basic gear and you can do it too. Even if you are shooting with a phone, you will get amazing opportunities on this trip. Besides, phones have become so good lately that you can even get prints from a good phone shot.
Landscape photographers, as well as architecture or urban photographers are welcome, and any photographer creating other genres of fine art photography (still life, portraiture, conceptual) or aiming to learn how to do it, will find this workshop a great tool for advancing their photography to the next level. The subject you work with is not that important, what you want to convey through it is, and you will find out why that happens and learn how to do it.
We will shoot architecture, landscapes, and travel photography, but the knowledge you will acquire in this workshop can be applied to any subject or photography genre, since it is based on your personal style and not necessarily on a specific subject. Shooting a different genre than the one you shoot regularly is always one of the best ways to stay inspired, get new ideas, and learn to think outside the box.
Suggested Preparation Material
Except for the material available through the workshop itself, the following books and courses are good learning resources to prepare for this workshop.
The resources cover multiple theoretical, practical, and post-processing subjects for an overall pre-workshop preparation, which will give you better captures in the field and more impressive final images. It is particularly important to consult them before the workshop since this workshop is a practical one.
- Video Course 7+ hours – Understanding Fine Art Architectural Photography – The Complete Course – an exhaustive video course about creating fine art photography, with an emphasis on architectural subjects – From vision andcomposition to advanced post-procesing.
- Video Course 5+ hours – From Vision to Final Image – Mastering B&W Photography Processing – extensive analytical black and white photography conceiving and post-processing.
- Video Tutorial 2.5+ hours – Creating (en)Visionography – Long Exposure, Architecture, Fine Art Photography – theoretical and practical analysis of (en)Visionography, fine art photography, architecture and long exposure photography, working with the tilt-shift lens.
- eBook 425 pages – From Basics to Fine Art – Black and White Photography – Architecture and Beyond – extensive theoretical and practical analysis of fine art black and white photography – principles, rules, practical advice, post-processing.
What equipment/software you need
Camera
- A camera with Bulb function or with Manual mode that can shoot long exposure past 30 seconds. If you don’t want to shoot long exposure, you don’t need the bulb function, but I wouldn’t miss in your place the chance to shoot long exposure.
- A cable release/remote control to control the shutter during the exposures, in case your camera does not have this function.
Lenses
- Your favorite lenses. The first choice will be a wide-angle or ultra-wide-angle lens, which will enable you to get closer to your subject, cover a larger field of view, and create more dynamic images. If you have a tilt-shift, bring it with you, as it is a great lens for architecture and landscape photography. If you don’t own a tilt-shift lens, but you would like to get one (it is not a requirement for the workshop, only if you want to), I would recommend starting with the 24mm tilt-shift, which will cover the broadest range of subjects. In addition, a long lens in the range of 100-200mm or 100-300mm will be useful to be able to reach further and shoot details or subjects placed in the distance. You can get different discounts for photography gear from this link.
Filters
- ND filters if you want to shoot long exposure. Recommended: Formatt-Hitech Firecrest or Firecrest Ultra 10, 13 (or 14) and 16-stop ND filters. Alternatively, Formatt-Hitech Firecrest or Firecrest Ultra 10, 6 and 3-stop (or 4-stop) ND filters. If you want to cover more ground, you can consider a broader range consisting of a set of 3 (or 4), 6, 10, 13 (or 14) and 16-stop ND filters that would help you cover any exposure you may need. You can use the square or circular filter version. If you use the square filters, I recommend the Formatt-Hitech Firecrest anti-light-leak filter holder with magnetic polarizer. For any Formatt-Hitech Filter, holder, or accessory you need to purchase, use the code JULIA10 to get a 10% discount when ordering from this link or this link.
Tripod
- A sturdy tripod to stabilize your camera during long exposures or to experiment with creative photography (motion blur, ICM etc.). I have negotiated some discounts for my students from FLM tripods and you can get 10% discount using the code JULIAG10 when ordering from this link.
Laptop/Computer
- You can have a laptop with you but it is not necessarily required. If you do bring a laptop, the following pieces of software will be the most useful, and you can use my discount codes below to get them if necessary. You will need access to a computer for the online sessions, and you can use the software below if you want to apply the techniques Julia will be teaching in the post-processing and review sessions.
Software
- Photoshop, Lightroom or Camera RAW, Capture One, DxO PhotoLab, etc (depending on your preferences). Additional useful tools below.
- For any Topaz Labs software product, you can usually get some discounts when ordering from this link.
- For any DxO software (NIK plugins, PhotoLab, ViewPoint, FilmPack etc.), you can usually get some discounts when ordering from this link. You can use the code PAR_482777935_Y62O5N9V549T to get 15% off any DxO product.
