From the very... read more beginning, Julia’s preparation sets her workshops apart. Before each session, she shares an amazing amount of material tailored to the workshop. I admit, during my first workshop, I didn’t fully realize just how valuable that pre-workshop material was but didn’t make the same mistake in the second one, Investing the time to absorb her guidance beforehand made the following workshop experiences even more fulfilling. Julia also brings an incredible depth of knowledge about each location we visit. She’s studied the light, scouted compositions, and thought through the smallest details, giving her students a strong foundation to start. But instead of simply telling us where to stand and what to shoot, Julia teaches us how to truly see … how to connect with the spirit of a architecture and interpret it through our own vision. Her approach is deeply personal and inspiring, encouraging you to reach deep within yourself and express your own unique vision. One more thing that really stands out is how Julia supports every student, no matter their experience level. She starts by making sure everyone is comfortable with the basics, and then as the workshop progresses, finds 1:1 time with each person to focus on their individual challenges. Although you’re part of a group, it often feels like you’re getting a private mentorship and this individual attention is priceless. When we move from photographing in the field to processing, Julia once again surprises! Her expertise in processing eclipses her in-field knowledge ... and that’s saying something! Rather than following trends or creating “Instagram-friendly” shots, Julia’s focus is on creating personal works of art that you’d be proud to hang on your wall ... or even exhibit if you dare! This holistic journey equips you everything you need turn your vision into something very personal … from the moment you frame your photograph in the field to the final strokes in your processing! The workshop was very well organised, with each day being full with visits to iconic locations. However, the locations were only the start. Julia Anna challenged us all to find our vision and create our own unique art, by exploring the scene and finding and experiencing our own emotions in the composition. The amount of tuition and attention we received was absolutely amazing and far exceeded my hopes and expectations. I started my journey with the ebook she co-wrote with Joel Tjintjelaar -- From Basics to Fine Art -- to set the stage for my efforts. The ebook provided a solid starting point and captured my random thoughts on fine art photography. I then added her two courses -- Creating (en)Visionography and Mastering B&W Photo Processing -- to learn and understand the processes she uses for turning a vision into a final print. Not so I can copy them exactly, but so I can take those parts of her processes that make sense to combine with other processes and methods to help me achieve my goals. She is extremely knowledgable with all aspects of photography, which you will know if you have visited her website. Along with her experience in architectural photography, the traits I appreciated the most were her friendliness and patience out in the field. Julia's new video tutorial "Understanding Fine Art Architectural Photography" is outstanding just as I've come to expect from her instruction, whether in the form of a video, book, article or... read more workshop. The first half of the video course is theory and the 2nd half is a presentation of her techniques used to accomplish the wonderful black and white images she routinely produces. Julia is open with sharing those techniques, which is valuable to me. The techniques she shares are not the typical Photoshop/Lightroom techniques that you may see from other instructors. The techniques are tailored for b&w work of the type that Julia produces, and which I try to emulate, or at least use as a starting point, in my own work. A word of warning though - in the theoretical portion there are many interesting ideas presented, each of which can lead down multiple pleasant rabbit trails. Luckily for me, it's more about the journey than the product anyway. One of those ideas was seeking out a architecture course. My search for an online course lead me to Harvard University's course "The Architectural Imagination". The course is free, but the free version has a limited time for completion. I ultimately opted for the paid version after a discount was offered. The course begins with a study of Immanuel Kant's "Aesthetics" and the history of perspective. The course is so interesting it has also lead me down many more pleasant side diversions, so I haven't made it too far into the course yet. With respect to the practical 2nd half of Julia's tutorial I found new useful techniques there even though I have already read her books and articles and attended several of her workshops. The new technique that stands out for me is the use of multiple b&w conversions blended with masks. I've found that to be useful in achieving the final image I want, as well as saving time. So, I highly recommend "Understanding Fine Art Architectural Photography" and Julia's other books, articles and workshops.
